C-N Splits 1-1 in Labor Day Tournament

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. ---The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles swept Augusta State in their season opener with a 3 game victory. Carson-Newman won the first game 25-20 and rallied for a 25-23 second victory. The Lady Eagles finished the match with a 25-16 win over Augusta State.
"This was a big Regional win for us," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey, "We were glad that we could get it done in three games."
Junior Kelsey Fleck (Celina, Ohio) led the Eagles with ten kills and one block. Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) added three blocks and added 7 kills to the Eagle score. The Augusta State Jaguars were led by Jessica Howard, with 10 kills and 2 blocks. Also adding to the Jaguars effort were Lindsey Weider with 9 digs and Ashley Zappitell with 23 assists.
In their second match of the day the Lady Eagles fell to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets in five sets (25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 17-19). West Virginia State was led by Kerri Kravs with 15 kills and Kristen Hager with 10 digs. Also adding to the Yellow Jacket victory is Jennifer Paswaters with 52 assists, Christina Wichrowski with 3 aces and Amanda Luedtke with 3 blocks.
The Lady Eagles were led by Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) with 20 kills and 8 blocks. Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) added 10 digs while Allyson Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) added 25 assists to the Lady Eagle effort.
The Lady Eagles face Lees-McRae tomorrow, Saturday, August 30 at 10 a.m. and West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse for the Carson-Newman Labor Day Tournament.
