Lady Eagles Down Brevard 3-1 in SAC Opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles bounced back from a first-set loss for a 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18) win in their South Atlantic Conference opener in Holt Fieldhouse against Brevard on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way with 13 kills, including five in the decisive fourth game. Senior Allyson Cohrn (Hendersonville, N.C.) added 36 assists as C-N improved to 8-6 (1-0 SAC). Brevard falls to 7-4 (0-1 SAC).
Brevard took a quick one-set lead in the match, holding onto an early 10-3 lead in Set 1. Junior Brooke Seaman (Spring Hill, Fla.) had four kills in the set as the Tornados won nine-straight points to turn an early 3-1 deficit into the lead. Sophomore Rebecca Schoonover (Palm City, Fla.) had nine digs in the set.
Carson-Newman answered back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 win in Set 2.
Juniors Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Caitlin Schlegel (Anacortes, Wa.) combined for 11 kills as C-N evened the match. Cohrn (Hendersonville, N.C.) had 14 assists in set. As a team, the Lady Eagles had six aces in the set.
C-N would take the lead for good with rally for a 25-23 win in Set 3. Brevard grabbed an early lead at 15-9, but the Lady Eagles rallied to cut it to 17-17, eventually winning 25-23.
C-N followed Mozgai's five kills in the fourth set to put the Tornados away, 25-28. Seaman led Brevard with 15 kills. Freshman Chelsea Larsen (Greer, S.C.) added 12.
The Lady Eagles return to action this weekend at the Francis Marion Tournament in Florence, S.C.
C-N will face the host- Lady Patriots, as well as Montreat, Franklin Pierce, and Augusta State during the Friday-Saturday event. The next home match is next Tusculum at 6:30 p.m.
Brevard will travel back to Tennessee for their next match for a 2 p.m. date on Saturday with Lincoln Memorial .
