Sept. 11, 2008
BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman volleyball team fell to King College last night in a non-conference match-up 3-2 in five sets. The loss puts the Lady Eagles 5-4, 0-0 on the season.
The Lady Eagles won the first two sets 25-12 and 25-21 respectively, but the Tornados rallied in the third set to win 25-19. That momentum rolled into the fourth set, with King taking an early lead. The Lady Eagles fought back, making it a tight game full of lead changes and tied scores. However, it was the Lady Tornados that prevailed with a 25-23 win. King continued their rally to take the fifth match 15-7 and the win.
"King played with a lot of heart," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey, "I was very impressed with how hard they worked to gain the win. After winning the first two sets we packed our bags and mentally went home. We were clearly out worked tonight."
The Lady Eagles were led by Katie Troyer with 13 kills and Haley Bush with 20 digs.
"Haley Bush stepped up tonight and led on the defensive side. She listened well and passed off of serve receive so that our setters could run a play option," stated Mincey.
Also adding to the C-N effort was Jessica Brady and Carly Mozgai with 5 blocks a piece.
"There are some things we can take from this match and move forward from," Mincey concluded, "I am glad we will be back in the gym this weekend so we can rebound."
The Lady Eagles will try to rebound this weekend as they travel to Armstrong Atlantic State University this weekend for the 2008 AASU/Chatham Orthopedics' Pirate Volleyball Classic. Carson-Newman's first match of the tournament will be Friday, September 12, against Rollins College. The match is set to begin at noon.
