Lady Eagles Down Newberry 3-0
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Carson-Newman volleyball team ended its 2008 regular season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) win over Newberry College at Holt Fieldhouse Saturday, and wrapped up second place in the final South Atlantic Conference standings.
The Lady Eagles improve to 23-13 overall, 11-5 in SAC play. Newberry falls to 17-12, 8-8 in the SAC.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick start in the first set with a 17-9 lead over Newberry and finished with a final score of 25-15.
Newberry came out with intensity in the second set tying up the game several times before Carson-Newman broke away with a 22-19 lead.
The Lady Eagles finished the second set with a 25-21 final score. The third set started with a battle between both teams. Newberry tied the Lady Eagles at 9-9. Carson-Newman added some quick kills to take the lead with a 21-16 score and ended the set at 25-18.
"We regrouped from our loss last night against Wingate discussing eliminating unforced errors and serving tougher," said head coach Shannon Mincey, "We look forward to practice this weekend as we head into the conference tournament."
Carson-Newman was led by junior Jessica Brady (Fruitland Park, Fla.) tallying 11 kills. Senior Allyson Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) set up the Lady Eagles with 20 assists on the match. Newberry was led by Lorena Maia and Priscila Sales who added 10 and 9 kills respectively.
Carson-Newman honored their seniors this weekend.
Senior Haley Bush, a transfer from USC Spartanburg, is currently ranked 9th in the conference in digs per game averaging 3.41 for the Lady Eagles.
Hailing from Hendersonville, North Carolina, senior setter Allyson Corhn has recorded 1,400 assists, 79 service aces and 322 digs during her four years at C-N.
Kelsey Fleck, from Celina Ohio has had 2,871 swings, piling up over 1,200 career kills, 53 career solo blocks and 176 assist blocks.
A Morristown, Tennessee native Salem Stepp has served 70 aces and accumulated 927 digs during her four years as a Lady Eagle.
Vanessa Kinsler, from Gray, Tennessee, in only two years at Mossy Creek, accumulated 110 career block assists and 62 solo blocks. Vanessa is currently serving as the Lady Eagles student assistant.
"I am so pleased that our seniors could start and finish on the court tonight," said head coach Shannon Mincey, "That was really special for them. Our team played well today. This senior class has been special to me as this is my first true recruiting class. I was sad to know that today would be the last time I would have the opportunity to coach them in Holtfieldhouse."
Carson-Newman will be back in action as they take on the #7 seed in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Thursday, November 13 at 5 p.m. The match is being held at Mars Hill College.
