Carson-Newman Wins Over Catawba 3-1

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lady Eagles defeated conference rival Catawba College 3-1, giving them a 3-1 record in the SAC and 12-9 record overall. Carson-Newman fell to Catawba in the first set, but rallied back to win the next three (25-16, 25-14, 25-18, 25-17).
Catawba was led by senior Melissa Griffith who put down twelve kills for the match at nine digs. Freshman setter Megan Courson added 22 assists to the Catawba effort and two kills.
The Lady Eagles came back in the second set with a 25-14 win. The momentum of the game picked up and Carson-Newman was able to seal the win over Catawba 25-18 and 25-17 in the third and fourth sets respectively.
"I was pleased with our performance today," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey, "We went into this match focused on playing well together and defending their top hitters. Catawba has always been a quality team and are well coached-she tried to make appropriate adjustments switching players around."
Carson-Newman was led by junior middle blocker Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) with 18 kills. Kelsey Fleck (Celina, Ohio) and Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) put up 12 and 10 kills respectively to add to the Lady Eagle win.
"Our serving was very effective today," added Mincey, "We seemed to be in control of the offense throughout the match."
The Lady Eagles will be on the road next weekend as they face Newberry, Friday, October 3 at 7 p.m. and Wingate, Saturday, October 4 at 4 p.m.
