Bulldogs top Lady Eagles, 3-0

WINGATE, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College 3-0 Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20 to improve to 17-1 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. Carson-Newman falls to 12-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Senior outside hitter Kathryn Reddick (Franklinton, N.C.) led the Wingate attack with 10 kills while hitting .350 for the match. Sophomore middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) added nine kills for the Bulldogs while sophomore middle blocker Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in with eight. Freshman setter Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) had 28 assists and 11 digs while freshman libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, Ill.) racked up 13 digs.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) had seven kills and seven digs for the Eagles. Senior right side hitter Kelsey Fleck (Celina, Ohio) and sophomore outside hitter Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) added seven kills each. Junior setter Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and senior setter Allyson Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) each handed out 12 assists for Carson-Newman while senior libero Haley Bush (Spartanburg, S.C.) collected a match-high 20 digs.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first set on kills from Gale and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.). The Eagles fought back to cut the lead to four at 18-14 on a block from Mozgai and junior middle blocker Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio). Wingate responded by scoring the next four points of the set, getting kills from three different players to go along with an ace from Gale to make it 22-14. The lead would not go below seven the rest of the way.
An ace from junior defensive specialist Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.), followed by a Carson-Newman error gave the Bulldogs a 20-14 lead in the second set. Mozgai answered with a kill to cut the lead to five, but the Eagles could get no closer the rest of the set.
Carson-Newman took a 15-10 lead in the third set, thanks to consecutive aces from Corhn along with a Wingate error. The Bulldogs fought back to tie the set at 15 on a block from Bloemer and Willis. The lead would go back and forth over the next several points, with neither team building a lead larger than one until a kill from Reddick gave Wingate a 21-19 advantage. Freshman outside hitter Janice Ehorn (Orange, Conn.) followed with a kill to stretch the lead to three, which was followed by a Carson-Newman error. The Eagles could get no closer than three the rest of the way, with Bloemer finishing the match with a kill.
The Bulldogs hit .316 for the match, with 42 kills and 11 errors in 98 attacks. Carson-Newman hit .112, with 31 kills and 20 errors in 98 attacks. Wingate hit .400 in the first set and .341 in the third. The Bulldogs racked up eight blocks, led by five block assists from Bloemer and three from Reddick. Billo had two block assists and a solo block. Each team had four aces; Corhn had a match-high two for the Eagles.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action Tuesday, hosting Lincoln Memorial at 6:30 p.m.
