C-N Defeats TC, Falls To WU

WINGATE, NC-- Carson-Newman eared a 3-1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-19, 30-22) win over Tusculum, but fell 3-0 to top-seed Wingate in the semifinals to end their 2006 season.
In the Tusculum match, TC cut the lead to 24-22 on a kill by senior outside hitter Vivian Lacy, but Carson-Newman pulled away with a kill by Kelsey Fleck and a service ace by Kari Gibson. Fleck led the Lady Eagles with 18 kills.
The third game also started out close, with the scored tied at 14 before Carson-Newman reeled off eight of the next 10 points for a 23-16 lead. The Eagles went on to take the game 30-19. Senior outside hitter Melissa Miller had three kills during that key stretch.
Carson-Newman jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the fourth game. Tusculum was able to close the game to 26-22, but the Eagles closed out the match with the final four points, with Fleck and Miller recording kills.
Against Wingate, Miller had eight kills and 13 digs to lead the Eagles in both departments. Fleck (Celina, Ohio) added seven kills while Gibson had 26 assists and seven digs. After losing game one, the Lady Eagles built a 10-2 lead in game two, but a kill by Rebecca Brezovec tied the match at 18-18. An ace by Brezovec gave the hosts the lead for good at 22-21. The Lady Eagles conclude their 2006 season with a 17-15 record.
