C-N Wins One of Two Matches

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles won their second match on the first day of their Labor Day tournament at Holt Fieldhouse, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan, 3-0 (30-22, 32-30, 30-20) after dropping their opening match to Lander, 3-1 (27-30, 29-31, 30-18, 28-30).
Kelli Sorensen led the Eagles with 18 kills in the first match while Melissa Miller had 10 kills apiece. Miller led the Eagle defensive effort with 12 digs while Kari Gibson notched 33 assists in her first game of the 2006 season. Lander took control early, winning the first game with a .529 hitting percentage and holding off an Eagle rally to win the second game. Kay Stewart had 14 kills to lead the Bearcats.
Against Kentucky Wesleyan, the Lady Eagles shook off their frustrations by hitting .429 in the first game. Sorensen led the way with 13 kills in the match while Gibson and freshman Bruna Rasuck combined for 27 assists. Rasuck led the defensive effort with six digs while Miller, Gibson, and Salem Stepp added five apiece. The Lady Eagle service dominated Kentucky Wesleyan with 12 aces. Gibson had four in the match while Sorensen, Miller, Haley Bush and Rasuck had two aces apiece.
