Lady Eagle VB Win 2, Lose 2
March 29, 2007
CHARLESTON, WV-- After defeating Alderson-Broaddus to open the Country Inns and Suites Classic at the University of Charleston, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles defeated Concord University, 3-0, but lost to West Virginia State and the University of Charleston.
The Lady Eagles (6-4) finished the first day of the tournament with a 3-0 (25-30, 23-30, 21-30) loss to West Virginia State. Kelsey Fleck led C-N with 14 kills and Melissa Miller added seven. Haley Bush led the Lady Eagle defense with 15 kills while Miller contributed eight. Kelli Sorensen contributed three solo blocks while Kari Gibson had 27 assists.
"West Virginia State was the scrappiest team we have played," coach Shannon Mincey said. "They read our hitters well and their setter did a great job. I was pleased with the level of competition we were able to play. Kelsey had the best game she has played yet. I can't say enough about how hard she worked to get herself open and to put the ball away."
On Saturday, C-N shook off the Friday loss with a 3-0 shutout of Concord University, a team the Lady Eagles defeated in their 2006 season opener on August 29. The Lady Eagles won 30-23, 30-24, and 30-25, but lost to the University of Charleston, 3-0 (30-32, 20-30, and 27-30) to end their run in the tournament.
Kelli Sorensen was the lone Carson-Newman representative on the All-Tournament team.
