Lady Eagles Land Six on All-SAC Team
Nov. 7, 2008
ROCK HILL, SC - Carson-Newman coach Phil McNamara, who guided the Lady Eagles to the 2008 South Atlantic Conference championship, was named Women's Soccer Coach of the Year for the third time in his career, while freshman goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie (Mississauga, Ontario, Can.), who led the league in save percentage and shutouts per match, was named Freshman of the Year at the league's awards banquet Thursday night.
MacKenzie, who led the Lady Eagles to five shutouts in SAC play, was one of four Carson-Newman players named to the All-Conference first team. Joining her on the first team are midfielders Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Katie Perea (Cumming, Ga.) and defender Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.). Forward Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) and defender Katie Hunter (Barrie, Ontario, Can.) were named to the second team.
Moore finished the regular season as the Lady Eagles leading scorer with eight. Perea followed her with six scores, adding game-winners at L-R and Wingate. Morris and Hunter helped anchor a defense that allowed only three goals in eight SAC matches.
Carson-Newman posted a 7-1 record in conference play to win the league title. The Lady Eagles play Friday afternoon in the 2008 South Atlantic Conference Tournament at 3 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C. against fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne. C-N beat L-R 2-1 in the only meeting between the teams this season in Hickory, N.C.
The Fair Play Award for women's soccer also went to Carson-Newman. The award goes to the team that demonstrates good sportsmanship in conference play.
