Oct. 29, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Lady Eagles outplayed the Tornados of Brevard College in the South Atlantic Conference match-up finishing with a 3-0 score. Carson-Newman improves to 12-5, 6-1 in the SAC and Brevard falls to 6-11-1, 0-7 in conference play.
In the last second of the first half, sophomore Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) chipped the ball over the Brevard keeper Jordan Box to make the halftime score 1-0. The assist came from a short pass from freshman Katie Hunter (Mississauga, Ontario). Carson-Newman outshot Brevard nine to one at the half.
"This evening Brevard proved to be a tough opponent," said head coach Phil McNamara, "They worked hard all evening and after some early pressure on our behalf Brevard settled down and gained confidence."
The second goal of the match came in the 60th minute of the game when sophomore Lydia Wright (Nashville, Tenn.) placed a Carson-Newman corner kick into the mouth of the goal and the Brevard keeper Jordan Box tipped the ball into the back of the net.
With five minutes left in the game, senior Megan Jullian (Knoxville, Tenn.) headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick from Wright.
Carson-Newman led with 20 shots on the night. Brevard tallied 5 shots.
"I am very pleased with the performance of the defense and goalkeeper tonight," added McNamara, "It is another clean sheet in a conference game. This is the 3rd conference clean sheet this season and in this conference that is difficult to achieve."
The Lady Eagles will be back in action Saturday, November 1 at 5:30 p.m. in a conference match-up against Newberry College. The light dedication will begin at 5 p.m.
