Lady Eagles Defeat Mars Hill 2-0
Oct. 4, 2008
Jefferson City, Tenn. - Carson-Newman defeated South Atlantic Conference rival Mars Hill College 2-0, improving to 8-3 overall, with a 3-0 record in the SAC. Mars Hill drops to 5-5-3 overall and 0-3 in the SAC.
"I was really delighted with the result and clean sheet tonight," said head coach Phil McNamara, "I thought it was the best first 45 minutes that we have played all season."
Senior Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) found the back of the net twice against Mars Hill. In the 36th minute of the game, Moore drove to the goal and slid the ball past Mars Hill keeper Becca Sellars into the right corner of the net. The Lady Eagles outshot the Lions 11-0 in the first half.
"We had great intensity, passing and movement tonight," added McNamara, "Our girls gained a lot of confidence from the win earlier this week where we challenged their players and played better than we have played all season. That confidence carried into this game."
The Lions came out strong in the second half and the Lady Eagles matched them defensively. With 18 minutes left in the game, senior Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) fired a shot in the back of the net off of a cross from sophomore Lydia Wright (Nashville, Tenn.) to make the score 2-0.
"I have to give Mars Hill credit," said McNamara, "They really stepped up in the 2nd half and had good possession in first 20 minutes."
Overall Carson-Newman outshot Mars Hill 18-2, which secured their 2-0 win. "All in all it is a strong conference performance against a well coached team," McNamara finished, "Brittany Moore had a great game with excellent runs and two great finishes."
The Lady Eagles will be back in action against Catawba College Saturday, October 11 in Salisbury, N.C. at 3 p.m.
