22nd-ranked Lady Eagles Roll to Win in Opener over Chowan, 3-1
Aug. 31, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. --- The Carson-Newman Lady Eagle soccer team opened its season Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the Chowan Hawks.
Despite their heat, the Lady Eagles pushed through to win their first game, and second match in as many days. C-N beat the University of the Cumberlands in exhibition match Saturday night, 7-1.
"We are delighted with 10 goals on the weekend," said Head Coach Phil McNamara, "especially with a young team and the hot weather, we are pleased with the outcome."
After a slow start in the first half, Sophomore Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) slipped one in past the Chowan Keeper in the 27th minute. Three minutes later, in the 30th minute, freshman Melanie Shannon (Kelowna, B.C.) added another goal to the C-N scoreboard. Gruenenfelder added a third goal, her second of the day, in the last seconds of the first half , pushing the Lady Eagle advantage to 3-0.
"It was hot for both teams, which slowed the pace of the game down. We had a lot of different players score goals which is very encouraging," added McNamara, " I am very satisfied so far, but we will need to be a little more consistent the next two weekends against regional opponents."
Chowan started out the second half strong with a goal in the 52nd minute by Clara Danzeisen. The Hawks battled all half but Carson-Newman proved to be too strong.
Carson-Newman will face Queens University in Charlotte N.C. next Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m.
