Carson-Newman Defeats Concord University 7-1

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Carson-Newman women's soccer improved to 9-4 on the season after defeating the Lady Lions from Concord University who fall to 8-8 with a 7-1 score.
"I am delighted with the win and performance tonight," said head coach Phil McNamara, "Anytime you are coming off a conference loss its always interesting to see how the team will respond. I am glad that the entire squad pulled together and played very disciplined. It was a well deserving win against a good opponent and well coached team."
The first goal came from sophomore Brianna Buckley (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) in the 11th minute of the game. Freshman Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) passed the ball into the open half of the field where Buckley placed the ball in the lower right corner of the net.
With just 12 minutes left in the first half, Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) finished a quick pass from senior Megan Julian (Knoxville, Tenn.) to up the score to 2-0.
The Lady Eagles found the back of the net in the 5th minute of the second half when freshman Lydia Wright placed the ball in the lower right corner on a corner kick from Julian.
In the 54th minute of the game Howell slid the ball past Concord keeper to make the score 4-0.
With 23 minutes left in the game, Concord struck with a goal from freshman Nicole Dirnagl. Dirnagle placed the ball in the net during a loose ball in front of the goal.
Carson-Newman struck again with 17 minutes to go in the second half when senior Katie Perea (Cumming, Ga.) dribbled past Concord keeper on a breakaway initiated by a long ball from senior Shea Kinzer (Knoxville, Tenn.).
The 6th Lady Eagle goal came from Perea with three minutes left in the game. Perea placed the ball in the goal after a series of C-N shots. She was assisted by Howell.
Carson-Newman finished the game with a final goal from senior Jesse Stephens (Knoxville, Tenn.). She was assisted by Howell.
"Now all of our concentration looks ahead to a very strong opponent on Thursday which is a very important game for us at this point in the season," added McNamara, "We had some great individual performances tonight which is a great boost before the conference game."
Before the game Lady Eagles head coach Phil McNamara was honored for his 100th win against conference rival Tusculum College last Wednesday 2-1. McNamara has won three South Atlantic Conference titles, two SAC Tournament titles, and has made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances. During his time at C-N he has put the Lady Eagles on the national map, leading them to two NCAA final four appearances and is 4th in all time SAC wins.
Carson-Newman will return to action against conference rival Wingate University Thursday, October 16 in Wingate, N.C. at 7 p.m.
