Carson-Newman Eagles Squeeze Past Wingate in OT
Wingate, N.C.----Carson-Newman College senior midfielder Katie Perea (Cumming, Ga.) scored with 3:17 remaining in overtime to lead the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Wingate University Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Thursday night at the Wingate Soccer Complex. The C-N Eagles improve to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.
The first half would see little action until late in the period, when Wingate sophomore defender Samantha Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) hit the post from outside the box. Bulldog freshman Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.) had two chances on rebounds from close range, but both were saved by C-N freshman goalie Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ont.). Wingate held a 7-0 advantage in shots at intermission, including a 4-0 edge in shots on goal.
Kinney had another opportunity late in the second half when she got behind the Eagle defense, but MacKenzie was able to come up with another save to keep the game knotted at zero. Wingate held a 13-2 advantage in shots at the end of regulation, while holding a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
The Eagles had a golden opportunity early in overtime, but Wingate senior goalkeeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) made a diving save on a close-range shot from Carson-Newman sophomore forward Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.)
Perea was able to find the back of the net at the 96:43 mark, scoring on a grounder from 20 yards out that found the left corner of the goal. The overtime tally was Perea's fifth goal of the season.
Wingate outshot Carson-Newman 13-5 in the match, while holding a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Each team took five corner kicks. Mackenzie had seven saves for the Eagles, while Smith notched one save for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 22) at 7 p.m. against rival Lincoln Memorial University.
