Oct. 1, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Lady Eagles battled for a 2-1 win over South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum College. Carson-Newman's record now stands at 2-0 in the SAC and 7-3 overall. Tusculum falls to 2-1 in the SAC and 5-4-1 overall.
"Anytime we play Tusculum we know it will be a battle," said head coach Phil McNamara, "This is a young team that has had to learn the hard way that you have to work hard for wins, especially in the conference and against Tusculum."
The Tusculum Pioneers struck first with an unassisted goal from senior Kelly Barron in the 10th minute of the game. Barron found the back of the net on a drive to the goal to beat Carson-Newman keeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, O.N.).
The Lady Eagles responded just before the end of the first half with a goal by defender Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) on a free kick resulting from a Pioneer foul. Carson-Newman tied up the score 1-1 at the half.
" I have to give the players a lot of credit," added McNamara, "They came out and worked hard for each other and seemed to dominate for the duration of the game." Carson-Newman took the lead in the 48th minute of the game when senior Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) found the upper right hand corner of the Pioneer net. Moore was assisted by sophomore Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.).
The goal put the Lady Eagles ahead with a 2-1 score. The remainder of the game was a defensive battle with both teams taking shots at the nets. Carson-Newman outshot the Pioneers 14-7.
" I am absolutely thrilled with the win, especially after the weekends' performance in Colorado," stated McNamara, "This is the first time we have beaten Tusculum at home in a long time. All in all every player played their heart out and that is what it takes to play against Tusculum."
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, October 4 at 7 p.m. at McCown Field.
