Sept. 5, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The crowd at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park got their money's worth as the Queens University of Charlotte Royals battled the Carson-Newman Eagles in the second game of the Queens Tournament Friday night. The Eagles (2-0 overall/0-0 South Atlantic Conference) scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute of play to defeat Queens (0-3 overall/0-0 Conference Carolinas) 2-1.
Carson Newman struck first with a goal from Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) in the 34th minute of play. The Royals answered back seven minutes later. Kelsey Howard scored the first Queens goal of the season unassisted to even the match at one all. Howard was able to take advantage of a Queens corner kick and a collision between Eagle goalie Shannon Clancey (Toronto, Canada) and Royal Lyndsay Segarra .
The second half ticked by without either team being able to find the back of the net. Queens did not register a shot in the second 45 while Carson Newman hit five. Goalie Kristen Kornacki was able to make four saves in the second half for Queens to keep the game tied at one.
The golden goal came at the 102:27 mark when Katie Perea (Cumming, Ga.) was able to sneak the ball past the Royal defense and Kornacki on into the right corner of the goal after a scuffle in front of the net. Parea's goal was unassisted. Carson Newman will square off with Pfeiffer University at 1pm at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park.
