Carson-Newman Defeats Armstrong Atlantic 3-1
Sept. 12, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lady Eagles made their winning debut tonight under the new lights at McCown Field and brought a strong win over the Lady Pirates with a 3-1 victory.
"We are absolutely delighted with the win," said head coach Phil McNamara, "We lost to this same team last year by the same score which shows a major turn around for us and displays the strength and character of our young team."
The first goal of the night came from the Lady Pirates Lyndsi Stricklen. She snuck the ball past C-N keeper Lauren MacKenzie in the 20th minute of the first half.
Carson-Newman responded in the 35th minute when Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) found the back of the net on a cross from senior Megan Julian (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Julian added yet another assist on the night when senior Brittany Moore finished her cross and slid the ball past the Lady Pirate keeper into the lower left corner of the net.
Both teams battled back and forth during the whole 90 minute match. "This was a high pace game for us," added McNamara, "It wasn't the best technical game but with the hype of the first game under the lights, I was very pleased." The game lived up to its hype with over 300 fans cheering on the Lady Eagles in their debut game under the new stadium lights.
The Lady Eagles sealed their win when freshman defender Melissa Morris drilled the ball past the Armstrong Atlantic on a free kick outside the penalty box.
"We worked hard and pulled out a great win," finished McNamara, "I was delighted with our performance."
The Lady Eagles face Columbus State on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. on McCown Field.
