Oct. 7, 2008
Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman women's basketball team has been reading in local elementary schools through the Students' Obtaining the Ability to Read (S.O.A.R.) program this fall. The Lady Eagles are involved in this program as part of the NCAA community involvement initiative.
The Lady Eagles and their coaches have been traveling to elementary schools in Hamblen and Jefferson County and reading to these students every week in order to encourage them to enjoy reading. Groups of three or four basketball players read several books to the students and then have a question and answer time.
"We have had such a great time going to the elementary schools," said graduate assistant Emily Paffrath, "This program has allowed us to unify our team and serve our community."
The women's basketball program will continue this program throughout the fall encouraging local students to enjoy reading.
The Lady Eagles kick off their season Saturday, November 15 at 4 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse.
