Lady Eagles 2-0 with 92-72 win over Lees-McRae

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman women's basketball team run-and-gunned its way to a 92-72 rout of visiting Lees-McRae in the second night of the Eagle Club Classic at Holt Fieldhouse Sunday.
The Lady Eagles are now 2-0 on the young season, having scored 92 points in both contest. Lees-McRae falls to 1-1 overall.
"We aren't where we would like to be, but to be this early in the season, I am certainly pleased to score 92 points both games," said Carson-Newman head coach Dean Walsh.
Local product Ashley Kyle led the Lady Eagles in scoring for the second consecutive night, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Carson-Newman as a team was 34-of-79 from the field, including 7-of-23 from behind the arc.
Four other Lady Eagles reached double figures, including Ashley Tipton (13), Zoriah Williams (11), Shari Buford (10) and Mandy Mendenhall (10). Lindsey Eggleston came off the bench to grab a team-high nine rebounds, part of a 51-28 rebound advantage that C-N held.
Thirteen different players saw action for Walsh, with 11 making the scorebook.
Janina Thurau paced Lees-McRae with 16 points, followed by Emari Ready with 13 and Kayla Newman with 11.
Carson-Newman led 15-10 and followed with a 10-3 run before the midpoint of the opening half to push the margin to double digits. Tipton powered the surge with a pair of three-pointers and finished 3-of-6 from behind the arc for the game.
The Lady Eagles built a 52-35 advantage by halftime and led by as many as 30 points in the second stanza.
Carson-Newman will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Anderson (S.C.)
