Lady Eagles to host Pink Zone night against Lenoir-Rhyne
Feb. 10, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY -- The Carson-Newman women's basketball team will host a WBCA Pink Zone night on Wednesday for its South Atlantic Conference matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse.
The community is encouraged to attend, as all proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund. Yow, who was the women's head coach at North Carolina State, lost her battle with breast cancer on Jan. 24.
"It's a great way to try to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer," Lady Eagles head coach Dean Walsh said. "So many women are affected by this deadly disease, and this is our small way to help in the fight against it."
"I hope and encourage everyone in the community to come support us and our efforts in this fight. I hope we can pack the house in pink."
C-N enters the contest on a two-game winning streak after defeating Mars Hill 94-79 on Saturday and needs a win to gain ground on L-R in the SAC standings. The Lady Eagles (16-5, 7-3) are third in the standings and are 1.5 games back of first place L-R (19-3, 9-2) and Tusculum with six games left to play. L-R handed C-N its most lopsided loss of the year earlier this season, winning 87-65 on Jan. 24 in Hickory, N.C.
L-R will be looking to bounce back as it had its eight-game winning streak snapped over the weekend, losing to Newberry 73-52 on Saturday.
The Bears will provide C-N's high-powered offense with a tough test as they bring to town the No. 1 scoring defense in the conference. L-R is allowing just 62.5 points per game, while the Lady Eagles are second in the SAC in scoring at 83.2 points per game.
Lady Eagles senior forward Ashley Tipton (Knoxville, Tenn.) will look to set two career milestones Wednesday. Tipton needs just two 3-pointers (198) to reach 200 for her career and is 18 points shy (982) of 1,000 for her career.
Junior forward Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) is also nearing 1,000 points for her career as she has 960 after an 18-point performance against Mars Hill over the weekend.
Radio: The game will be broadcast on WMTN-AM 1300 (Morristown, Tenn.), as well as webcast at www.wmtnradio.com.
