Lady Eagles Host Mars Hill Saturday Night
Jan. 9, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles will look to carry over the momentum from a win over Division I UNC-Asheville tomorrow night as they return to South Atlantic Conference play with a home contest against Mars Hill.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast live on WMTN 1300 AM, beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. It will also be available on the internet, by visiting www.wmtnradio.com.
Carson-Newman enters the contest 10-3 overall, 1-1 in SAC play. Mars Hill is also 1-1 in the league, 8-5 overall.
"It will be another tough conference opponent," said C-N head coach Dean Walsh. "Last time we saw (Mars Hill) in the regular season at home, they hammered us. We will need to bring a high energy level to this game or we will get beat."
The Lady Eagles traveled to Asheville Wednesday night and rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes to record a 78-74 victory. C-N forced 25 turnovers in one of their better defensive efforts of the season.
Mars Hill is coming off a 76-64 loss to SAC foe Newberry Wednesday.
"Our effort Saturday will need to be there on both ends of the court, like it was against UNC-Asheville," Walsh noted.
Mars Hill is led by sophomore guard Brittni Young, who is currently the top scorer in the conference at 17.0 points per game. Shamia Terry is averaging 10.0 points and 8.2 rebounds a game for the Bulldogs.
"They are an up-tempo team that likes to run and zone press you," said Walsh. "They are very aggressive, both offensively and defensively."
Though Mars Hill ranks next to last in the league in scoring offense, the Bulldogs are the second-best rebounding team on the offensive end of the court.
"We have to do a better job rebounding than we have been, or they will have a field day," Walsh said.
Carson-Newman is led in scoring by junior guard Ashley Kyle with 14.6 points per game. Shari Buford (12.6), Mandy Mendenhall (11.6) and Lindsey Eggleston (10.2) are also averaging double figures.
The Lady Eagles lead the all-time series between the two schools, 35-15. The two teams split last year's two meetings, with the road team winning both games.
