Strong First Half Powers Lady Eagles Past Anderson, 80-68

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Carson-Newman used a 13-0 run in the first half to break the game open and went on to post an 80-68 victory over 24th-ranked Anderson University in a non-conference women's game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center.
Ashley Kyle led the Lady Eagles (3-0) with 15 points, while Shari Buford and Ashley Tipton added 14 points apiece.
Anderson's Shanice Wilson led all scorers with 20 points. Keana Boyd added 18 points and Kirsten Peterson contributed 11.
Carson-Newman led 22-19 at the 9:03 mark of the third quarter and then proceeded to run off 13 straight points to take a 35-18 advantage. The Lady Eagles took their largest lead of the the game at 52-28 three and a half minutes into the second frame.
Three 3-point goals helped Anderson (0-2) cut the Carson-Newman lead to 12 with 11:54 to play. But the Eagles held off the AU rally and increased their cushion up to 70-52 with 6:10 to play. In the final six minutes, Anderson could get no closer than 11 points.
The Lady Eagles shot 47-percent in the first half to build a 43-28 halftime lead and finished at 42-percent for the game. Anderson was 40-percent from the field.
Carson-Newman held a 52-38 advantage in rebounding, led by Buford with 10 boards and Zoriah Williams with eight. Twenty-four of the Lady Eagles' rebounds came on the offensive end, including six from Williams.
Peterson pulled down 10 rebounds to record a double-double for Anderson. Boyd also recorded a double-double for Anderson by handing out 10 assists.
The Carson-Newman bench outscored the Anderson bench, 24-5.
