Hot-shooting Lady Eagles run away from West Georgia
Nov. 28, 2008
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Carson-Newman used another strong shooting performance to defeat its second ranked opponent in six days, cruising to a 96-73 win over No. 21 West Georgia in the opening day of the X-Trem Shootout at North Georgia.
The Lady Eagles (4-0) shot 56-percent from the field, including a 10-of-21 effort from three-point range. West Georgia also shot the ball well from the floor at 52-percent.
The difference in the contest came in the depth of Carson-Newman head coach Dean Walsh's bench. He played 13 girls in the contest, and the Lady Eagle reserves outscored their West Georgia coutnerparts 37-11. Carson-Newman also made things happen with its defense, getting 30 points off turnovers.
Junior Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) paced the Carson-Newman attack with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Kyle has led the Lady Eagles in scoring in all four games this season.
Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) added 18 points, followed by Lindsey Eggleston (Buena Vista, Colo.) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Tipton (Knoxville, Tn.) was the fourth Lady Eagle to reach double figures with 13 points.
Domonic Cranford led West Georgia (3-2) with 21 points, while Ashley Huff tossed in 20 points and 12 rebounds. Huff played her prep ball with Kyle at nearby Jefferson County High School. Carson-Newman assistant coach Michael Potts was Jefferson County's coach during that time.
Carson-Newman shot nearly 58-percent from the field in the first half to open up a 50-39 advantage at intermission.
The Lady Eagles will continue play in the X-Trem Shootout tomorrow as they take on West Alabama at 3 p.m.
