Carson-Newman Falls to University of North Carolina, 114-64, in Exhibition Play

CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina got 16 points from sophomore guard Italee Lucas and a double-double from senior forward/guard Rashanda McCants as the No. 6 Tar Heels defeated visiting Carson-Newman, 114-64, Tuesday night at the Dean E. Smith Center. All 13 healthy players scored for Carolina, including five in double figures, and the hosts forced 40 turnovers that led to 35 points in the victory.
Carson-Newman got its only lead of the night at the 18:14 mark as sophomore Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) scored two of her team-high 16 to give the Eagles a 6-4 advantage. The Tar Heels would then go on a 16-3 run, capped by a McCants bucket, to effectively put the game away. UNC led by as many as 31 in the first half before going into the break with a 63-33 advantage.
After Mendenhall scored the first basket after halftime, UNC scored 18 straight over the next 3:02 to build an 81-35 lead. Heather Claytor's three-pointer in the final minute finished the scoring, and the 50-point final advantage was Carolina's largest of the night.
Claytor, sophomore guard Cetera DeGraffenreid and freshman guard She'la White joined Lucas and McCants in double figures. Claytor finished with 12 points courtesy of four threes, while DeGraffenreid tallied 11 points, six assists and six steals. White, playing as a Tar Heel for the first time, had 10 points, three steals and two assists.
In addition to White, freshmen Chay Shegog and Laura Broomfield, and sophomore Nicole Powell also made their UNC debuts Tuesday. Shegog, a 6-5 center, had nine points, six boards and three blocks in 18 minutes. Broomfield, who earned the start thanks to her recent solid play in practice, finished with eight points and six rebounds, while Powell, a walk-on guard, finished with two points and five rebounds.
Carson-Newman will conclude its exhibition schedule Thursday night against the University of Tennessee at Thompson-Boling Arena at 7:00 p.m.
