Lady Eagles improve to 6-0 with win over Maryville
Dec. 4, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY – The Carson-Newman women’s basketball squad remained the only undefeated team in the South Atlantic Conference Wednesday night with an 81-68 win over Maryville College at Holt Fieldhouse.
Carson-Newman (6-0) shot just 35 percent (28-80) from the field and was held under 90 points for only the second time this season.
“I won’t turn down an ugly win,” said Lady Eagle head coach Dean Walsh. “But we can’t afford to miss shots like we did. We got into some foul trouble that really hurt our flow.”
“Maryville played very well tonight,” he added. “I attribute the win to the effort of the girls. It wasn’t pretty, but we played hard.”
Carson-Newman had five players reach double figures, led by Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) with 18 points and Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) with 17.
Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) chipped in 15, while Zoriah Williams (Calera, Ala.) and Angela Volentine (North Platte, Neb.) added 13 apiece. Williams also collected 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Jeanna Dalton paced Maryville with 20 points, followed by Natalie Munday with 14. Tara Heyboer and Ashley Holder added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
There were ten lead changes in the first 11 minutes of the contest, before Carson-Newman went on a 10-2 run, powered by seven points from Buford, to take a 28-20 lead.
Consecutive baskets by Volentine in the final 38 seconds of the half gave the Lady Eagles a 43-31 cushion at the break.
Maryville was able to pull within 50-44 at the 13:50 mark of the second half, but that would be as close as the Lady Scots could get.
Carson-Newman will return to action this Saturday as Lincoln Memorial visits Jefferson City for a 6 p.m. tip-off. It will mark the 2008-09 South Atlantic Conference opener for the Lady Eagles.
