C-N Survives Slow Finish to Beat North Georgia, 76-72
Dec. 17, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles never trailed en route to holding off visiting North Georgia College and State University, 76-72, on Wednesday night in Holt Fieldhouse.
With the win, C-N improves to 8-2 on the season, and ends a two-game losing streak.
The Lady Eagles led by 16 points at the half, but saw their 66-56 lead with just under five minutes to play almost evaporate in the final moments.
NGCSU cut the Lady Eagles lead to two at 74-72 on a three-point play by Syretha Marble with ten seconds left. After a pair of missed free throws by junior guard Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.), C-N forced the Lady Saints' Alyssa Stokes into a traveling violation to escape with the win.
"We were fortunate tonight," C-N Head Coach Dean Walsh said after the win. "We have to be more consistent and we have to finish."
The Lady Eagles were able to survive a poor shooting night to grab their eighth win. C-N hit just 12-of-32 shots in the second half, but forced 30 turnovers.
Kyle led the lady Eagles with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Senior Lindsey Eggleston (Buena Vista, Colo.), who hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to ice the game, added 12 points and four rebounds.
Marble and Meredith Montgomery each had 15 points to lead North Georgia.
C-N returns to action on Friday afternoon when it hosts North Greenville University in Holt Fieldhouse. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
