JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the final time this season, Carson-Newman (16-9, 11-8 South Atlantic Conference) is on the road.
C-N makes the jaunt to Newberry (10-15, 6-13 SAC) for a 4 p.m. tip Saturday from Eleazer Arena.
Carson-Newman won the first meeting between the teams 79-72 in Holt Fieldhouse on Jan.17. Carson-Newman shot a then season-high 47.1 percent from deep, got up big early and stiff-armed the Wolves for the seven-point win.
Carson-Newman shot 54.0 percent from the field while holding Newberry to 37.9 percent shooting.
The Wolves balanced out the shooting discrepancy by going 24-of-27 at the line compared to the Eagles' 17-of-24 effort, and by outrebounding C-N 36-30.
Newberry's Drake Downs is second in the league in scoring at 19.4 points per game. Downs has scored in double digits in all but two of the Wolves games this season. Downs has produced 11 games with at least 20 points and two with at least 30. Downs scored 23 in the first meeting in Holt Fieldhouse, scoring 19 points after halftime.
Ever since winning back-to-back games against Mars Hill and Coker, Newberry has found itself mired in the offensive doldrums. The Wolves had shot 50 percent or better in three straight games, but have only topped 45 percent shooting once in the last six contests. Newberry is averaging 66.16 points per game in that stretch and shooting 39.02 percent from the field.
Jack Browder enters the contest on 1,963 career points. He is sixth all-time in scoring in both Carson-Newman and South Atlantic Conference history. Browder is 37 points away from becoming the sixth player in school history and the the fifth in league history with 2,000 career points. Browder is fifth among active NCAA Division II players in career scoring and 15th among all players in all divisions. Browder needs 17 points to move into a tie for fifth on the all-time scoring list in SAC history. Daniel Willis from Lenoir-Rhyne (1991-01) had 1,980 points in his career. Chris Jones is fifth in Carson-Newman history in scoring with 2,007 points, Browder is 44 points away from him.
With 862 career rebounds, Browder is fourth among active Division II players in career rebounds. Browder, plus Hall of Famers Mike Ogan and Tommy Everette are the only three members of the 1,500/700 club in Carson-Newman history. Browder is the only player in the NCAA era to do that.
Browder is one of three active players in college basketball with 1,900 career points and 800 career rebounds. Carl Cleveland at Young Harris and Gonzaga's Graham Ike are the only others in the NCAA. Browder's 862 rebounds are the fifth-most in school history and seventh in SAC history. He needs 27 more rebounds to equal Wingate's Bryan Grier (2003-08) for sixth on the league's all-time rebounding list with 889.
With 38 career double-doubles, Browder already has career mark for Carson-Newman for all-time double-doubles (at least in the NCAA era where we have game-by-game stats). He has the most double-doubles among active NCAA Division II players. He has the eighth-most double-doubles amongst players in all divisions. Browder's 13 double-doubles this year lead the SAC and are fourth nationally.
Browder is the only player in NCAA Division II to lead his league in scoring and rebounding. Browder is also the only player in the country in the top 20 in both scoring and rebounding. Browder is sixth in scoring at 23.6 points per game and 16th in rebounding at 9.8 boards per game.
