JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-2, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) will try to bounce back from its first league loss of the year against another foe receiving votes in the NABC Coaches Poll. UVA Wise (9-2, 3-1 SAC) arrives in Holt Fieldhouse for a 7:30 p.m. tip Wednesday.
C-N fell Saturday to No. 18 Anderson 94-80, while UVA Wise took down a Lenoir-Rhyne team also receiving votes in the NABC poll, 76-67 in the Prior Convocation Center. The Cavs had won eight straight games before falling to Emory & Henry at home 83-76 on Dec. 10. The contest is the final one for the Cavs in 2025.
Carson-Newman has won back-to-back games against the Cavs and eliminated Wise in the quarterfinals of the SAC tournament last year. Carson-Newman reset its own South Atlantic Conference Tournament record for field goal efficiency, scorching the nets to the tune of 68.9 percent shooting, en route to a 104-95 win. UVA Wise was not poor offensively. The Cavs only turned the ball over once and shot 47.9 percent from the field. Wise also knocked own 13-of-34 threes. However, star big man Evan Ramsey was unavailable for the Cavs in that game.
Jack Browder and Matt Bilbrey have both been on heaters for the Eagles. Browder has scored 20 or more points in four straight games, while Bilbrey has three straight 20-point nights for the first time in his career.
UVA Wise is led by Winthrop transfer Yoro Diallo. He is averaging 15.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He, Anderson's Osmar Garcia-Araujo and Jack Browder are the only three players in the SAC in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding.
Jack Browder enters the contest on 1,549 career points. He is 12th all-time in scoring, and, if you follow numbers, the program's 13th all-time 1,500-point scorer. He only needs his 72nd career double-digit scoring effort to move him into 11th on the all-time list and even with Sawyer Williams and his 1,559 career points. Browder is eighth among active NCAA Division II players in career scoring and 36th among all players in all divisions.
With 702 career rebounds, Browder is fifth among active Division II players in career rebounds. With 1,500 career points, he has joined Mike Ogan, Tommy Everette, Charles Clark, Sawyer Williams and Antoine Davis as the sixth player in school history with 1,500 career points and 500 career rebounds. Browder, Ogan and Everette are the only three members of the 1,500/700 club. Browder is the only player in the NCAA era to do that. Browder is one of eight active players playing NCAA college basketball with 1,500 career points and 700 career rebounds. Carl Cleveland at Young Harris and Maceo Williams at Ashland are the only others in NCAA Division II.
With 29 career double-doubles, Browder already has career mark for Carson-Newman for all-time double-doubles (at least in the NCAA era where we have game-by-game stats). He has the second-most double-doubles among active NCAA Division II players, behind Young Harris' Carl Cleveland's 30. He has the 15th-most double-doubles amongst players in all divisions.
Browder is one of only two players in NCAA Division II to lead his league in scoring and rebounding. Browder, Frostburg State's Mike Montano (29.0 ppg - 1st, 12.0 rpg - 3rd) and Queens' Tahj-Malik Campbell (22.1 ppg - 13th, 9.7 rpg - 18th) are the only players in the top 25 nationally for both scoring and rebounding. Browder is 14th in scoring at 22.0 points per game and 10th in rebounding at 10.5 boards per game. Browder and Campbell are the only two to lead their leagues in both categories.
Tipoff between the Eagles and Cavs is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
