JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (4-3, 1-2 SAC) wraps up a three-game road trip to end September when it heads to Newberry (5-0-1, 1-0 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
Head coach Simon Duffy's team will be looking to close the month of September strong on Saturday night. After losing its season opener, C-N rattled off a three-game winning streak before seeing that halted by a two-game skid. Now, the Eagles look to build another winning streak against an unbeaten Newberry team. In all four of C-N's wins this season, it has scored multiple goals. When scoring multiple goals under Duffy, C-N is 74-2-5
Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio) is one of 13 players in DII with three game-winning goals so far this season. Bukiewicz leads Carson-Newman with five goals, tied for the most in the South Atlantic Conference. Her five goals have come in all four of the Eagles victories this season.
Carson-Newman returned to its strong defensive form in a shutout win of Mars Hill on Wednesday. The Eagles posted their third clean sheet of the year and held the Lions to just two shots, one in each half.
C-N has been dominant against Newberry, winning the nine of the past ten meetings in the series. Five of the nine wins have only been decided by one goal, including the four most recent matchups. Last season, the two clubs played to a scoreless draw in Mossy Creek. It was the first-ever tie in the series. During this recent ten-game stretch, the Eagles have outscored the Wolves 20-6. C-N leads the all-time ledger 24-6-1.
Similar to Newberry's men's soccer program, the women's team is also unbeaten early in the year with a 5-0-1 record. It's the first time in program history that the Wolves are unbeaten through the first six games of a season. The Wolves are one of 37 teams still unbeaten in DII and one of just two in the SAC.
During this six-game unbeaten streak, Newberry has not allowed a goal to score. It is one of just two teams in DII to have not allowed a goal to score this season, the other being #2 Minnesota State. The season started with a scoreless draw versus Converse on Sept 4, but since then DeeDee Alexander's team has found its offensive footing. A pair of 2-0 wins followed against Emmanuel and Shorter, and was complimented by a win its SAC opener over Mars Hill, a team C-N beat 5-0 on Wednesday. Wins over Southern Wesleyan and Shaw have extended Newberry's winning streak to five games, the sixth-longest active winning streak in DII.
Goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez is off to a quality start in goal, which included winning SAC defensive player of the week honors after the opening week of the season. She has made at least four saves in three of her five starts. Newberry opponents have allowed 54 shots, 21 of which have been on target and all saved.
Emily Castaneda leads a balanced Newberry offense. The senior defender has scored goals in back to back games, for an offense that ranks just ninth in goals scored this season. Seven others have scored one goal. Natalie Ruiz has scored one goal and leads the team in assists with two.
First touch from the Smith Road Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. A video stream is available with a subscription to FloSports.
