Sept. 11, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Carson-Newman men's and women's soccer teams will host their first games under the new lights on McCown Field this weekend.
The women face southern power Armstrong Atlantic State on Friday at 7 p.m, while the men take on Francis Marion University on Saturday, also at 7 p.m. the Lady Eagles will cap the weekend hosting Columbus State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"It is always nice when you make improvements that enhance the experience of student athletes and this is definitely one of those," said men's Head Coach Allen Vital, "The lights will allow us to play and practice in the evening so that we don't interfere with class schedules for athletes, and work schedules for our supporters."
The lights honor the memory of former Eagle Roland File, who was killed in an automobile accident last year.
"I want to personally thank all of the people, especially the Files, that helped to make this possible," said Vital, "We are delighted that it is finished."
The multi-year process led to a state-of-the-art lighting system, including a satellite system that monitors the efficiency of each individual bulb.
The lights are the first phase of the improvements being made to McCown field. The soccer teams hope to fund a new press box as well as the renovation of the playing surface and fencing areas, including new bleachers.
"We are extremely excited about the new era of soccer under the new lights," said women's head coach Phil McNamara, "We are so thankful to the donors, friends and family. We are anticipating a much greater support from the campus community including professors and staff because we are able to play at more convenient times."
