Eagles and Bulldogs play to 1-1 tie

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men's soccer team tied the 25th-ranked Eagles of Carson-Newman 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Wingate Soccer Complex. Wingate is now 8-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the SAC. The Eagles move to 8-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference.
The Eagles struck first in the first half when freshman forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) took a lead pass from freshman midfielder Ross Carhart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and found the back of the net at the 13:59 mark.
Wingate had the answer when sophomore forward Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) netted a line drive from outside the box into the top left corner for his eighth goal of the season at the 33:09 mark.
The teams would both be held scoreless in the second half, sending the game to overtime. Wingate held an 18-13 advantage in shots in regulation, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs had a golden opportunity in the first overtime, when sophomore forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) headed one past the goalkeeper but had the shot blocked by an Eagle defender. Wingate had another shot with 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but Carson-Newman sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) was able to stop a shot from junior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) to send the match to a second overtime.
The Eagles had their opportunities in the second overtime. Hill had a close shot in the left side of the box hit the crossbar halfway through the period. Carson-Newman had one final chance when junior forward Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) took a cross right in front of the net, but sophomore goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) was there to make the save.
Wingate out-shot Carson-Newman 22-16 for the match, while holding an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Calandra racked up five saves for the Bulldogs while Moore had nine saves for the Eagles. Wingate also held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday when they host Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. Carson-Newman is back in action Wednesday night, traveling to Belmont Abbey for a 4 p.m. start.
