Carson-Newman Downs Concord University 6-1

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN - Carson-Newman men's soccer defeated Concord University 6-1 to improve to 7-2 overall. Concord falls to 4-8 on the season.
The Eagles stuck first in the opening half when Matt Finlay (Liverpool , England) placed a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box by the Lions in the 36th minute of the game. Their momentum continued as Gustavo Velloso (Belo Horizonte) finished a cross in the 39th minute from freshman Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) to make the half time score 2-0.
The Concord Lions scored quickly in the beginning moments of the second half when Varney Vincent put the ball in the back of the net in the 48th minute. Carson-Newman quickly answered when freshman striker Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) snuck the ball past Concord keeper after a quick drive to the net.
Hill found the back of the net for the second time of the game when he placed the ball in the right hand corner of the Lion net. Sophomore Gustavo Jimenez (Alpharetta, Ga.) then shot from outside the eighteen yard line and found the top right corner of the goal to make the score 5-1.
Fresh into the game, junior Darren Hulem (Derwood, Md.) headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick served by Jimenez to make the score final at 6-1.
"It was a good team win and I liked the energy that the guys off the bench brought to the game," said head coach Allen Vital, "We didn't play well in the first half but in the second half we got the job done. Now we need to focus on Catawba."
The Eagles will return to action Saturday, October 11 in a conference match-up against Catawba College on McCown Field.
