Carson-Newman Tops Lincoln Memorial, 3-0
Oct. 1, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman men's soccer team topped the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters 3-0 in a conference showdown Wednesday night at McCown Field.
The win pushed the Eagles to 5-2 on the season and 3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Lincoln Memorial dropped to 7-3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the SAC.
"I am delighted with the win," Carson-Newman Head Coach Allen Vital said, "It was a great team effort and we played extremely well."
Both teams came out strong defensively in the first half, remaining deadlocked until the Eagles struck first the final minute of the half.
Carson-Newman's first goal came with 23 seconds remaining in the half by freshman Robert Hill (Middlesborough, England). Hill picked up the unassisted goal as he snuck the ball past Lincoln Memorial keeper Michael Watkins.
In the second half, the two squads came out strong again, but the momentum shifted in the Eagles' favor 15 minutes in.
At the 65th minute, a Railsplitter yellow card set the Eagles up for penalty kick by sophomore Matthew Finlay (Liverpool, England). Finlay blasted the ball past Watkins to put the Eagles up 2-0.
The Eagles finished the game strong, scoring their third and final goal in 82nd minute of the match. Junior Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) found the back of net on a pass by Hill.
"The whole team played hard, but we had some guys that really stepped up tonight," stated Vital, "Robert and Omar had big games for us tonight, with Phillip Grossmiller (Bowie, Md.) also having a great game"
Getting the shutout for the Carson-Newman was sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.). Moore had two saves in the win. Michael Watkins was saddled with the loss for Lincoln Memorial.
Carson-Newman will now travel to Hickory, N.C. for a conference match-up against Lenoir-Rhyne this Saturday, October 4. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Bears Field. Lincoln Memorial will also be on the road this Saturday, taking on Francis Marion at 2:00 p.m.
