Carson-Newman Edges Mars Hill 2-1 in Conference Opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman men's soccer team edged out Mars Hill 2-1 in their conference opener Wednesday night. The win pushed the Eagles to 3-2, 1-0 (SAC) and dropped Mars Hill to 3-3, 0-1 (SAC) on the season.
The Eagles struck first with a goal by freshman Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) in the second minute of the game. The goal was the result of a corner kick by freshman Ross Carhart (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Carson-Newman would strike again ten minutes into the game on a goal by sophomore Ben Backstrom (Knoxville, Tenn.). Junior Phillip Grossmiller (Bowie, Md.) picked up the assist.
In the second half, Mars Hill battled back strong, scoring the lone goal of the half. In the 49th minute, freshman Giovanni Malnati snuck the ball past C-N sophomore keeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.). However, the Eagles held off the Lions' efforts to get the win.
The Eagles will be back in action this Saturday at 4 p.m. on the road against Brevard, while Mars Hill will play host to North Greenville in a non-conference match-up this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
