Carson-Newman Routs Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-1

HICKORY, N.C. - The Carson-Newman College men's soccer team (6-1-0, 4-0-0 SAC) tallied three goals in the first half en route to a 5-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (5-3-1, 1-1-0 SAC) Saturday night at Bears Field at Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
Carson-Newman broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute when Phillip Grossmiller (Bowie, Md.) scored from 25 yards out at the left side of the goal. The Eagles made it 2-0 eight minutes later on a goal by Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) as he scored on a loose ball inside the box.
C-N scored a final time before the end of the first half with 2:13 left to go. Everardo Flores (Silver Spring, Md.) converted a ball deflected in the box to make the halftime score 3-0.
After the break, Lenoir-Rhyne got onto the scoreboard at the 47:02 mark when freshman midfielder Ryan Shanaghan (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola JC) received a cross from freshman midfielder Randy Taylor (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) that he headed into the back of the net.
Carson-Newman would add two more goals to make the final score 5-1. Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) and Gustavo Jimenez (Alpharetta, Ga.) each scored on loose balls in the box.
Carson-Newman goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) picked up the win for the Eagles while L-R freshman Matthew DiCerbo (Boca Raton, Fla.) suffered the loss for the Bears.
Carson-Newman will be back in action at home against Concord this Wednesday, October 8, at 6:00 p.m. at McCown Field. Lenoir-Rhyne will also take the field on Wednesday when it hosts Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference match at 8:00 p.m.
