JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman baseball (37-17) remains 23rd in DII Baseball's latest poll that was released Monday afternoon.
Head coach Tom Griffin had led the program to a 37-17 record this season. It's C-N's most wins in a season since 2008 and the second-most in a season in the Griffin era. Overall, it's the program's fourth-most wins in a season in program history. The Eagles compiled their most wins in a conference regular season, winning 21 games in league play this season. 21 of the 37 wins for the year have been at home, the third-most home wins for the program since turning to DII.
The strong season has resulted in the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2008. The program's four other NCAA Tournament appearances came during the 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2008 seasons. C-N has a 5-9 record with wins in two of its last three NCAA Tournament games.
The Eagles have won regional title in their four NCAA Tournament berths. That regional title came in the program's first NCAA Tournament in 1999. Carson-Newman collected wins over St. Leo and Florida Southern to win the South regional title and advance to the DII Championship series. C-N fell to Kennesaw State and West Virginia State in its first two games of the DII World Series.
The Eagles are joined in DII Baseball's rankings by two South Atlantic Conference teams. After winning the SAC Tournament, Catawba moves up to five and Lenoir-Rhyne drops to nine.
Carson-Newman is one of eight Southeast region schools ranked. Young Harris is the highest ranked school from Conference Carolinas at number 11. North Greenville slots behind them at 12, while Belmont Abbey ranks 16th. Lander is the highest rated Peach Belt team at 15, with North Georgia dropping six spots to no. 19.
Opening round play for seventh seeded Carson-Newman begins Thursday afternoon at 6:00 p.m. against two-seeded Belmont Abbey. All of C-N's games this weekend at the NCAA tournament will air with a free audio stream available courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com/live.
