JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 13/7 Carson-Newman (27-11) completes a five-game road stretch tomorrow afternoon when it meets up with UVA Wise (23-17) in a non-conference contest at 3:00 p.m from Burchell Stallard Field.
C-N snapped a four-game road losing streak with a win in the series finale over Coker on Saturday. The Eagles have ten wins on the road this season, it's just the second time in the past six seasons it has reached that mark. Under head coach Tom Griffin, C-N has won double-digit road games 13 times and has posted a winning record on the road 11 times. The Eagles are 10-7 on the road this season despite losing four of their last five.
These two South Atlantic Conference clubs faced off just nine days ago, with C-N winning the three-game series in Jefferson City. The low-scoring weekend featured a 6-2 series opening win for C-N, before the two sides traded 5-1 victories in Saturday doubleheader with the Eagles winning the finale. The Eagles hit .287 at the plate in the three meetings with the Cavaliers. Logan Floyd led the way with his five-hit, five-RBI weekend. Kolton Casson (Benton, Tenn.) struck out a career-high 13 to seal the series win.
Carson-Newman pitching has held opposing offenses to two runs or less 17 times this season. Over the past two seasons combined, C-N only did that 15 times. It's the second-most occurrences of holding an opponent to two runs or less in the Tom Griffin era. During the 2008 season, Carson-Newman baseball's winning season in DII, C-N held opponents to two runs or less 22 times throughout that season that featured a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
When Carson-Newman scores first, it is 20-2 this season. In 2024, the Eagles won just 10 games when scoring first.
UVA Wise is coming off a series win versus Newberry over the weekend, winning the first two games of the series before dropping the finale. Overall, the Highland Cavaliers are 23-17 and are an even .500 during the conference season, 12-12. Since losing the series to C-N nine days ago, Wise has won two of its four games.
For just the third time this decade, UVA Wise has reached the 20-win mark. It's the first time since 2019 that the program has that many wins, already surpassing its win total as well from last season. The Cavaliers are hoping to break up a stretch where they have lost four of their past five midweek games. At home this season, head coach Brandon Costa's team is 17-9.
Joshua Morgan continues to be the best hitter on the team with a .368 batting average and a team-high 29 RBI. He has hit safely in six of his last seven games, which includes a five-hit weekend against Carson-Newman. Three other Wise batters have an average above .300 this season. The offense ranks second to last in scoring this season, averaging just 5.9 runs per game. They scored just eight runs in the three games earlier this season and struck out 21 times in 25 innings.
The Cavaliers are one of the top defensive groups in the South Atlantic Conference this season. They have the second-highest fielding percentage at .972 and have turned the fourth-most double plays this season.
First pitch from Burchell Stallard Field is set for 3:00 p.m. A live stream of the contest is available with a subscription to FloCollege at cneagles.com/flobase.
