First-place Eagles prepare for weekend series with Limestone

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 24/19 Carson-Newman (16-6, 7-2 SAC) takes its strong start to conference play on the road this weekend as it visits Limestone (12-12, 6-6 SAC) for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
The Eagles have won seven of their first nine conference games of the season and are tied for first with Lenoir-Rhyne, who has a similar league record.
Carson-Newman hits the road for a South Atlantic Conference series for the second time this season. In C-N's first conference road series, two of the three games against Newberry. Two of those contests with the Wolves were decided by one run with both teams winning one of them. Dating back to 2024, the Eagles have won four of their past five road conference series.
The pitching staff has impressed in 2025, leading the South Atlantic Conference with a 4.41 earned run average. The Eagles have held their opponent to three runs or less in half of their games this season and are 10-2 in those contests.
Trey Miller leads the Eagles with a .422 batting average and has a team-high 27 hits. After just 8 RBI last season, he already has 22 this season including 6 games with multiple runs batted in. Tanner Kilgore and Logan Floyd are also tied for the team lead with 22 RBI. Both are hitting above .300 this season, along with four others in the lineup. C-N ranks fourth in the SAC with its 7.8 runs per contest.
Carson-Newman has won seven of the past eight meetings in the series with Limestone, including four of its last five in Gaffney. In 50 all-time meetings, C-N has a 31-19 advantage and is 15 games above .500 under Tom Griffin against the Saints. The Eagles have won the past five series against the Saints.
Limestone has an even .500 record entering this weekend's series, 12-12 overall and 6-6 in SAC play. Picked 10th in the preseason poll, Limestone has responded well after starting conference play 2-4. It has won four of its last six games and has back to back series victories over Newberry and Tusculum. In the series with the Wolves, Limestone tossed back to back shutouts in the first two games of the series. The Saints won a pair of close contests decided by three runs or less against Tusculum.
Head coach Brett Harker's team has been given plenty of free passes this season. Limestone leads the conference in walks with 124, drawing more than five per game and has been hit by a pitch 48 times this season, second-most in the SAC.
Seven different hitters have double-digit RBI this season, led by Zach Greenberg's 20. He is hitting .380 and has RBI in eight of his last ten games. Ethan Bonocore has the best batting average on the team at .407 thanks to two, four-hit games this season. Limestone averages six runs per game, sixth best in the SAC and has scored double-digit runs nine times.
Two of Limestone's weekend starters have ERA's below 2.50. Colt Wilkins is 3-1 this season over 32.2 innings with a 2.48 ERA. He has three quality starts this conference season in which he has allowed zero runs. Kemper Nix has the lowest earned run average among starters at 2.02. He has one complete game shutout this season and has not allowed more than three earned runs in an appearance in 2025. As a staff, the Saints rank near the bottom with just seven strikeouts per nine innings.
