JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – #21 Carson-Newman (30-12) and King (12-29) will meet for the fourth time this season when the two clubs meet in a midweek contest Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Bristol.
This is the start of C-N's final road swing of the season, set to play the next five games on the road. Carson-Newman has double-digit road wins for just the second time in the past six seasons. C-N is 11-7 on the road this year.
The Eagles swept the opening-weekend series which included a 17-0 victory in the season opener. The other two meetings were closer affairs, four-run and one-run C-N wins. Offensively, the Eagles hit .354, scoring 33 runs on 34 hits in the three-game series. The pitching staff did its part, tossing a shutout in game one and finishing the series with a 3.60 earned run average and struck out 31 Tornado batters.
In non-conference games, C-N is 12-6 this season which included seven straight wins at the start of the year. The record in non-conference games dips to 2-4 when on the road this year with one of those wins coming last week at UVA Wise, a 16-2 run-rule victory.
Sophomore infielder Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) is having another fantastic season at the plate. His .371 batting average leads the team and so do his 56 hits and 44 RBI this season. He is coming off a weekend in which he went six for 10 at the plate against #7 Lenoir-Rhyne. Floyd has hit safely in 12 straight games and has reached base safely in 21 straight games, the longest streak of any Eagle hitter this year.
Carson-Newman pitching has held opposing offenses to two runs or less 19 times this season. Over the past two seasons combined, C-N only did that 15 times. It's the second-most occurrences of holding an opponent to two runs or less in the Tom Griffin era. During the 2008 season, Carson-Newman baseball's winning season in DII, C-N held opponents to two runs or less 22 times throughout that season that featured a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
10 of the past eleven meetings in this series have been Carson-Newman wins. King's only victory over the Eagles was a 6-5 win last April in Bristol. The Eagles have just four losses all-time when playing on the road in this series and have never lost back-to-back meetings.
King enters this midweek contest playing some good baseball despite being 17 games below .500. The Tornado have won three of its past four games thanks to a series win over Southern Wesleyan on Monday. Because of rain, that series was moved to Sunday/Monday, giving King just one day of rest ahead of tomorrow's contest. The game that sparked this winning stretch was a 22-17 victory over Mars Hill one week ago. The scoring party saw King trail by as many as four, before leading by as many 12 late in the game.
Conference play has been more kind to King this season. In Conference Carolinas play, head coach Brad Hill's team is 7-17, while sporting just a 5-12 mark when playing outside the league schedule. At one point earlier this season, King had lost six straight non-conference contests.
King's record this season can be somewhat deceiving. 12 of their 29 losses this year have been decided by three runs or less, but their last three losses have been by an average margin of 10 runs.
Josh Nuno is the top hitter for the Tornado this season, hitting .375 in just 22 games. Four other King hitters have at least 30 appearances and are hitting above .300 for a King offense that scores seven runs per game. Joey Amunategui III has 14 doubles for a King team that has the fourth-most doubles in Conference Carolinas this year.
On the pitching side, King has a high team earned run average at 8.76, ranking near the bottom in their league this season. They also allow more than 12 hits per nine innings, also near the bottom statistically.
First pitch from King's Baseball Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game will air with a free audio stream available courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com/live.
