JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Following a quaint and restful Easter weekend where six athletes competed at two events, Carson-Newman returns to full force with a pair of events in the Volunteer State. Athletes will either head to the Tennessee Invite at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville or the Scots Invitational, hosted by Maryville College.
Last week was a small sample size with a quintet of distance runners heading to the Electric City Invitational, hosted by Anderson, and then just Ben Swank going to Emory & Henry's Blue & Gold Invitational. However, all the Eagles performed at a high level with two wins and all finishing inside the top 15.
Swank took the spot in the javelin at the Blue & Gold Invitational, with a 51.57m throw. Meanwhile, in the Electric City, Keirieonna Wilson rewrote C-N's record books in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:46.49. Peyton Couch came in fifth in the women's mile, clocking 5:35.63. Jenna Pittman crossed the line in sixth in the one-mile invitational, 5:15.19. Finally, Andrew Thompson, 4:30.07, and Jerome Behrmann, 4:31.75, set new personal bests, finishing in 13th and 15th, respectively.
Head coach Kieran Showler-Davis will have his top athletes back in action, featuring Rylan Jordan, who holds the third fastest 100m, 10.17 seconds at Emory's Thrills in the Hills. Amine Kasmi will make his outdoor debut after his All-American indoor season, which closed with a fourth-place finish at the Indoor National Championships. Countless other athletes are trying to continue their strong starts, such as Lovelyne Larrame, also jumpers and pole vaulters, such as Brooke Taylor, Blayne Jackson, Verrol Sam, Carlos Kouassi, Cadence Dolgin and Katie Edmunds.
"I'm feeling good, we're coming off really good meets, and we've had a good week to catch our breath and get some good training in," Showler-Davis said. "With the weather looking great for the weekend, I'm looking forward to some great performances."
Friday's festivities at the Tennessee Invite are slated to kick off at 9 a.m., with Saturday's conclusion starting at noon. All events are being held at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Maryville's events are happening at the Austin Coleman Piper Memorial Track.
