ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the South Atlantic Conference's annual preseason coaches' poll, Carson-Newman women's outdoor track and field was picked to finish sixth, the league office announced on Friday morning.
The ranking was announced on the day the Eagles start their outdoor season at the Lee University Invitational. Head coach Kieran Showler-Davis is eager for the season ahead after a strong indoor campaign that featured a SAC gold medal from Katie Edmunds in the pole vault and countless school records.
"I'll just say, seeing that progression from everyone, usually we, I'd say we're more of an outdoor team, so seeing us do well indoors, that's definitely a good sort of benchmark to see where we are," Showler-Davis said. "Hopefully, everyone on the team, and not just these guys, but everyone on the team, makes that next jump and does even better outdoors."
The indoor champions, Wingate, claimed the top spot with 11 first-place votes and 132 points, entering as the frontrunner to repeat as conference champions in the upcoming season.
Catawba took second place with 111 points, while Tusculum had the other first-place vote and was tabbed for third with 106 points.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson took fourth and fifth, just five points between the two, with 99 and 94 points, respectively.
Carson-Newman missed out on the top five by three points, with 91.
Further down the way, with 77 points, is Lincoln Memorial in seventh. Mars Hill took eighth with 61 points, as UVA Wise, 49 and Newberry, 40, rounded out the top 10.
Coker with 37 points and Emory & Henry's 27, closed out the last two spots.
The Lee University Invitational begins today, and the events will continue on Saturday at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
