ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the South Atlantic Conference's annual preseason coaches' poll, Carson-Newman men's outdoor track and field was picked to finish third, the league office announced on Friday morning.
The ranking was announced on the day the Eagles start their outdoor season at the Lee University Invitational. Head coach Kieran Showler-Davis is eager for the season ahead after a strong indoor campaign that featured two first-team All-Americans in Rylan Jordan and Amine Kasmi.
"I'll just say, seeing that progression from everyone, usually we, I'd say we're more of an outdoor team, so seeing us do well indoors, that's definitely a good sort of benchmark to see where we are," Showler-Davis said. "Hopefully, everyone on the team, and not just these guys, but everyone on the team, makes that next jump and does even better outdoors."
The indoor champions, Wingate, claimed the top spot with 11 first-place votes and 132 points, entering as the frontrunner to repeat as conference champions in the upcoming season.
Catawba took second place, just one point in front of C-N, with 110. The Eagles received the only other first-place vote and had 109 points.
Five points adrift in fourth is Lenoir-Rhyne, with Anderson one point behind in fifth, 103.
Mars Hill, 72, and Newberry, 71, are separated by a lone tally, in sixth and seventh.
Lincoln Memorial with 65, Tusculum, 54, and UVA Wise, 43, round out the top 10. With Coker and Emory & Henry taking the final two spots.
The Lee University Invitational begins today, and the events will continue on Saturday at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
