Eagles Open Fall Practice
Sept. 23, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Fresh off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, the Carson-Newman baseball team began its fall workouts on September 16.
Head coach Tom Griffin welcomed 44 players out for practice, including 18 newcomers. The Eagles will be looking to replace four All-South Atlantic Conference players from last year, including All-American and Region Pitcher of the Year Brett Hontz.
"We have some positions that need to be filled," said Griffin, who is 114-57 overall in his three seasons at the helm of the Eagles. "We have five positions in the field open, and we also need to find out who our weekend starters on the mound will be."
The Eagles will scrimmage every weekend this fall, leading up to the Orange and Blue World Series the week of October 13. Griffin announced that the captains for this year's fall workouts are junior shortstop Mills Rogers and senior outfielder Tyler Wynn.
Carson-Newman compiled a 43-18 record last season and finished second in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 14-6 mark, one game behind regular season champion Catawba. The Eagles received an at-large bid to the NCAA South Regional, where they went 2-1 and placed third.
