Eagles fall at Pfeiffer, 10-3

Misenheimer, NC -- Pfeiffer improved to an overall record of 5-3 after downing Carson-Newman on Wednesday afternoon 10-3. Pfeiffer pounded out 18 hits, with all nine starters recording at least one. Pfeiffer hands Carson-Newman their second loss of the season and they move to an overall record of 5-2.
Carson-Newman started the scoring off in the second inning when Derek Long (Jefferson City, TN) led off with a double against Falcon starter Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC) (2-0), advanced to second on an error, and then later scored on a groundout by Antonio Nickel (Naples, FL).
Pfeiffer answered with three runs in the bottom of the third when they started the inning off by loading the bases on three straight singles by Tyler Smith (Locust, NC), Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC), and Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC). Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) and Will Davis (New London, NC) followed with RBI groundouts. Then Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) singled to right to bring home Shoemaker.
The Eagles tied the game up in the top of the fourth when Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, NC) led off with a single. Long followed with a walk and they advanced on a pass ball. Then a pair of RBI groundouts evened up the game at 3-3, but Pfeiffer answered quickly with three runs more runs in the bottom of the inning. Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) led off the inning with a double off Eagle reliever Michael Elliot (Chattanooga, TN). Smith followed with a walk. Strickland singled home Lyon and Smith came ome on a fielder's choice by Davis. Pou then drove Davis home with a single.
The Falcons added single runs in the sixth and seventh, the first of which on an RBI single by Pou and the second on a SAC fly by Smith. But the Falcons were not done there. They added two runs in the eighth when Shoemaker led off with a double and was followed by a Davis single. Dunn added a one-out RBI single and Mike Green (Brandon, FL) finished off the scoring with a SAC fly.
Fogleman led the Falcons on the mound by picking up the win. He went seven innings, surrendering five hits and two earned runs. At the plate, Pfeiffer used a balanced attack from one through nine but Shoemaker and Dunn both added three hits and Pou added a career high four RBIs.
For the Eagles, Elliot took the loss in relief by going 2/3 of an inning giving up four hits and three runs. Dozier led the Eagle bats by going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Carson-Newman returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Northern Kentucky in its home opener in Jefferson City. First pitch of the doubleheader is at noon.
