McIntyre Fires Eagles to Series Sweep of Augusta State, 8-3
Feb. 2, 2009
Augusta, Ga. - Junior Wes McIntrye (Chattanooga, Tenn.) allowed just three hits in seven innings as Carson-Newman completed a three-game sweep of Augusta State with an 8-3 win on Monday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Park.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-0 to start the season, while Augusta State falls to 0-3.
The Eagle left-hander surrendured a solo home run to the Jaguars' Shannon Wilkerson in the second inning before shutting down the ASU offense over the next five innings.
"Wes (McIntyre) did what Higdon did (Sunday)," Eagle head coach Tom Griffin said. "He located well, was effective with his secondary pitches, and attacked strike zone. It was a solid start to the year for him."
C-N finished with 12 hits on the day. They had 45 for the series.
The Eagles pushed four runs across in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. C-N would add two more in both the fifth and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.
Senior Rory Elliott (Jefferson City, Tenn.) made the most of his first start as an Eagle, going 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored. First baseman Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and shortstop Mills Rogers (Simsonville, S.C.) each added two hits and a stolen base. Long had two RBIs.
"Alot of guy contributed in some way or another," Griffin added of his team's season-opening sweep. "We were alright defensively and had alot of hits. For the opening weekend, I thought we played pretty well."
Carson-Newman returns to action on Friday against Montevallo University in Montevallo, Ala. Friday's first pitch with the Falcons is at 3 p.m. ET. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. ET at Johnson Field.
