Eagles Fire No-Hitter in Sweep of North Greenville
Feb. 25, 2009
TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Carson-Newman pitchers Jacob Lambert (Kettle River, Minn.) and Michael Elliott (Chattanooga, Tenn.) combined to fire a no-hiter in Game 2 as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from North Greenville University 5-4 and 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Tigerville, S.C.
With the wins, C-N improves to 10-5 on the season, while North Greenville drops to 2-14.
Lambert (1-0) earned the win after striking out eight and walking two in five innings on the mound, and Elliott (1) struck out two in two innings of work to pick up the save, as the Eagles combined for the 7-inning no-hitter for the win in the nightcap.
Despite the impressive effort in their second win of the day, Game 1 proved to be much tougher.
In the first game, Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Cody Nix each had two hits to lead the Eagles at the plate.
Randy Stegall, Justin Walters and Chad Drosieko had two hits each for North Greenville.
Eagles reliever Chase Boruff (1-0) (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and struck out one to earn the win.
Junior Ryan Hendrickson (1) (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) picked up the save after pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
Daniel Goodnight (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work.
The Eagles trailed 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning before making a comeback. Tyler Kitts (Knoxville, Tenn.) doubled and later scored on a Long double to tie the game at 4-4 and send it into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Zach Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) led off the inning for C-N with a double. Mason Guyman (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) then stepped to the plate and ripped a double, scoring Long for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Hendrickson struck out two batters in the home half of the eighth and was able to get another batter to pop out to seal a 5-4 win for C-N.
"We had solid pitching all day, and the defense played especially well," Eagles coach Tom Griffin said. "In the first game, we showed a lot of moxie by battling back the way we did. That was a big win."
In the second game, C-N starting hurler Jacob Lambert (Kettle River, Minn.) and reliever Michael Elliott (Chattanooga, Tenn.) combined for a no-hitter to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 win. The two combined to allow only three runners to reach base, while striking out ten.
Drosieko (0-1) was hit with the loss after surrendering three runs (one earned) on eight hits and striking out four in seven innings of work.
Derek Long went 3-for-4 for the Eagles, while Zach Long and Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) added two hits each.
Rogers scored on an error in the top of the first to give C-N's pitching staff all the run support it needed.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third after Rory Elliott (Jefferson City, Tenn.) scored via another North Greenville error.
C-N then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Tyler Wynn's (LaGrange, Ga.) RBI single.
C-N returns to the diamond on Friday in a South Atlantic Conference matchup at Lincoln Memorial. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
