Unbeaten Eagles open SAC slate at Lincoln Memorial

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – RV Carson-Newman (6-0) begins South Atlantic Conference play on the road, as it heads to Lincoln Memorial (3-5) for a three-game series starting Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Lamar Hennon field.
Carson-Newman is 6-0 to start a season for just the third time in its DII era, and for the second straight season. It's the second straight season C-N enters South Atlantic Conference play with an unbeaten record as well. C-N is just one of 21 DII teams still unbeaten and have played a game this season. It is one of six in the Southeast region and one of three in the SAC.
Carson-Newman has won eight of its last 12 SAC openers. Overall, the program 20-14 in the first conference contest of the year going 20-12-2 in the opening series. The Eagles won their first conference road series last year, winning the final two games in a series against Newberry.
The Eagles put together another high-level offensive effort in a midweek win at Tusculum. C-N now has scored 15 or more runs in consecutive games for the first time since February 10-11 against UVA Wise.
Logan Floyd entered the year with a 35-game on base streak. The junior infielder extended that streak to 37 games by reaching base multiple times in each of C-N's wins last weekend. The last player to have an on-base streak at 40 games or longer was Evan JuTrjevic in 2015, reaching base in 43 straight games from early February to the end of April.
On the pitching side, C-N has fared well to aid to this 6-0 start to the year. It has a 1.27 WHIP (Walks plus hits per inning pitched) which ranks first in the league and 13th nationally. The Eagles also rank top 20 nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.58) and in walks allowed per nine innings (3.56).
Carson-Newman leads the all-time series 47-43. The Eagles have won their past three series' against the Railsplitters, with their last series loss coming in Harrogate in 2022. C-N is an even 22-22 all-time when playing on the road in this series.
Lincoln Memorial was selected sixth in the SAC's Preseason Coaches' poll. The Railsplitters received 87 points and had one first-place vote from the league's coaches.
They began the year by splitting a doubleheader with Cedarville on opening weekend. That was followed by a pair of mid-week losses in back-to-back days, first falling 5-2 to Lee and then losing 8-7 in extra innings against #5 North Greenville. LMU was six outs away from a signature win but allowed four runs in the final two frames and eventually watched the Trailblazers walk it off in the 11th. This past weekend, Hillsdale College took two of three from the Railsplitters. LMU won the series finale and carried that momentum into a run-rule win over Bluefield State on Tuesday.
Head coach Justin Haywood is in his sixth season with the Railsplitters and is coming off a fourth straight winning season in 2025. His team's offense has feasted off extra-base hits through eight games played. Their 19 doubles and four triples both lead the conference. It's balanced effort to reach that number, with Alex Kowalski's three doubles leading the way. Brady Morse and Caleb Jordan are tied for the team lead in RBI wtih eight each and are both hitting above .367.
Junior pitcher Peyton Armour has been LMU's game one starting pitcher in series' to start the year. He has a 3.46 earned run average and has pitched at least six innings in both starts. Eli Edds has also drawn a pair of starts, but has totaled just four innings and allowed four runs. Lucas Smith is a high-leverage reliever that allowed just two runs in his first nine plus innings of work this season.
