JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-0) returns to action this weekend as it begins a three-game series against Cedarville (1-1) tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Tomorrow afternoon's series opener will be played at Lakeway Christian Academy with a start time of 2:00 p.m. The game will have a free audio-only broadcast available at cneagles.com/live. The doubleheader on Saturday will be back at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex starting at noon.
Carson-Newman started the 2026 season by sweeping a doubleheader against Charleston last Friday. Over the course of the 16 innings, C-N only trailed for two innings. The Eagles pitching staff highlighted the good start to the year, striking out 24 Golden Eagles hitters in 16 innings. Senior pitcher Jackson Underwood reset his career-high to lead the way with seven. Five of the six pitchers used recorded multiple strikeouts as well.
Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) entered the year with a 35-game on base streak. The junior infielder extended that streak to 37 games by reaching base multiple times in each of C-N's wins last weekend. The last player to have an on-base streak at 40 games or longer was Evan Jurjevic in 2015, reaching base in 43 straight games from early February to the end of April.
The Eagles were aggressive on the bases in a doubleheader sweep of Charleston. They swiped nine bases in 11 attempts with seven different players involved. Braxton Smith's two stolen bases led the way.
Despite cold and wintry conditions this past weekend, Carson-Newman's defense was still stout. It committed just one error in the two games and has a .985 fielding percentage, eighth-best nationally.
Carson-Newman meets Cedarville for the second time in the past three years. All five meetings have come in Jefferson City, with C-N winning four of them. CU's only win was a 17-13 shootout in the series finale on February 17, 2024. C-N has scored double-digit runs in three of the five meetings.
Cedarville was picked to finish fourth in the G-MAC South Division. CU finished 21-29 overall and 14-18 G-MAC last spring narrowly missing the conference tournament on the final day of the season.
The Yellow Jackets began the season by splitting a doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial this past weekend. The Railsplitters scored a go-ahead run in the sixth to win 6-5 in the opener. Cedarville responded by winning game two 8-3. They scored two or more runs in three different innings in the win.
Leading the pitching staff is senior lefthander and D2 Baseball Preseason All-America second teamer Jensen Wagoner. He was voted to the NCCAA All-America First Team and All-G-MAC Second Team after going 5-5 with one save while leading the league in earned run average (2.21). He pitched three innings of two-run ball this past weekend against LMU.
Wagoner was joined on the league's second unit by Eli Henderson and Kaden Wilde. Henderson started all 50 games last season with a team-leading .355 batting average. He also topped the club in hits (59), walks (35), hit-by-pitch (16), and assists (122) plus tied for the lead in runs (38).
Wilde started all 50 games and ranked second on the team in hitting with a .312 average. He ranked first in at bats (186), triples (9), runs batted in (31), total bases (87), and stolen bases (11). Wilde recorded five hits in seven at bats against the Railsplitters in an opening-weekend doubleheader.
First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Lakeway Christian Academy. The game can be heard on cneagles.com/live. Fans can also watch the radio crew at work with a feed of press row on YouTube.
A reminder that live video will only be available for Saturday's doubleheader on the Eagle Sports Network with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/floBase.
