Culpepper shines in Game two win for Team Orange
Carson-Newman baseball’s Fall World Series is now a whole lot more interesting. After being shut out on Thursday, Team Orange responded by winning game two of the series 7-1 on Friday morning at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman baseball's Fall World Series is now a whole lot more interesting. After being shut out on Thursday, Team Orange responded by winning game two of the series 7-1 on Friday morning at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
A pair of walks started the bottom of the first for Orange and it would take advantage. Navy committed a pair of errors in the frame and a wild pitch brought three runs home for Orange and it was 3-0 after the opening inning.
Team Orange would add on to its lead in the next inning. Team Navy did Team Orange many favors, issuing three more freebies in the second to lead to three more runs. Jacob Rogers and Seth Benner collected RBI base hits and Jack Wyatt drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0 after two frames.
Brock Culpepper was Team Orange's starting pitcher and he was fabulous. The redshirt-senior tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Eight of his 12 outs recorded were via the groundball.
Team Navy would score its first and only run in the top of the fifth inning. Kylan Hornbuckle started the frame with a leadoff double. After stealing third base, pinch-hitter Colton Evans drove in Hornbuckle with a sac fly to make it a 6-1 game.
Cole Nathan would extend the Orange lead to 7-1, singling in Wyatt from third in the sixth inning.
Team Orange turned to Eli Norris for the final three outs. Despite walking the bases loaded, Norris escaped the jam and pitched a scoreless seventh.
In the win, the Orange squad scored seven runs on six hits. Six different players recorded a hit. Aiden Gibson, Evan Mutter and Jack Wyatt were all on base multiple times in the win.
Team Navy was held to just one run on three hits, while committing three errors. Two of those three hits went for extra bases.
Kyle Adams was a bright spot on the mound for Team Navy. He pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one run to score on three hits with a strikeout.
The series is now tied at 1, with Navy holding an advantage in the run differential 11-7. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports network is available at cneagles.com/live.
